I decided to read this book finally. A friend loved it; the movie is coming out, so why not?
Not the most exciting read, although I did enjoy it some. Mainly for its descriptions of the Marsh, the wildlife there, fauna, and flora, and the concept of a coming-of-age story of a girl abandoned and left to fend for herself and the complications that arise from that. Still, it felt like the story lacked some dept.
As for the murder mystery, not that enjoyable; the back and forth to 1969 did not make me care about the murder of Chase or who might have done it. Those chapters just felt like a dull intermission.
The book feels more like a narration of the wildlife than an actual story. We don't get to know any character that well. Not even sure we get to know Kya properly; she not only evades the people around her as she does the reader. As I said, she lacks dept.
The poetry in the book, though, was positive.
Hopefully, the movie will make the story more interesting to watch.

As for the ending, I was not expecting it, but it also deserves a meh award.
