The Odyssey
by Homer
Genuinely never realized how long Odysseus is in Ithaca before the book actually ends. Which is a shame, because the misadventures were fun! But overall, seeing the legend of Odysseus conflicting with the man himself in Ithaca provided so much tension and drama to the narrative, especially with all the discussions of how he’s a “good man” followed by a census of how many people that were enslaved in his house…. ((it just provides an interesting contrast to cultural and societal expectations, especially when we see ancient heroes and try to compare them to today’s ideals))
Also Emily Wilson did a fantastic job with this translation; she focused so much more on the complexities of Odysseus and other characters with her diction that added to the need to keep flipping the page. The use of some more modern colloquialisms also helped make this specific translation engaging for modern audiences.
