eye-opening yet unsatisfying.
As a privileged and white reader, this book is very eye-opening about racism and colonialization. However, it is very repetitive and almost felt like I was being lectured at. Honestly, that didn’t bother me that much but it got pretty boring after several hundred pages of the same thing. Colonialization and racism is strongly hit upon, but sexism is almost completely ignored, as well. The ending likewise lacks a satisfying resolution. Overall, I thought this book was a decent read. I think the racism and colonialization aspects of it make it better than the tiny bit of fantasy thrown in. I wouldn’t read it for the fantasy. Would have rated it higher if it wasn’t so repetitive and like I was being hammered in the head.
