Black-Eyed Susans by Julia Heaberlin
3.0

Loved this book!... until the end. I loved the way that the reader collects pieces of the story from two different Susans: 16 year old Susan, left for dead, who remembers nothing of her abduction but is used at trial to successfully convict the alleged serial killer and adult Susan who chooses to face the past in the hopes to exonerate an innocent man and discover her true "monster".

I found Black-Eyed Susans such an enjoyable and intriguing read, until I reach Heaberlin's unexpected ending. To me, this ending was less stroke of genius and more cop-out. It was like she figured out that her main characters could not find a way to reach the conclusion on their own, and so she threw them a lifeline that could solve all their problems in a tidy chapter or two.

This dissatisfying ending would usually have me rate it a two star, but I enjoyed the rest of the book so much that I bumped it up to three.
