Broken Horses by Brandi Carlile

3.0

Dan and I read this as our car book over the last year and a half.

I LOVED the first 1/2 to 2/3 of the book - it felt raw, examined, visceral, relatable even with completely different life circumstances. It felt like the Brandi Carlile I know and love doing some good, hard, and beautiful work.

Then, it seemed to take a turn. Name dropping is not helpful or interesting to me, I don’t fully understand the love for some of her heroes (though she conveys it well), and the end felt out of touch. Even as she tried to iterate how musicians aren’t necessarily rich her explanation of the pandemic felt yucky to me. I loved what she did at the rally to (literally) amplify voices but after, the rest left a sour taste in my mouth.

Still very glad she wrote it and glad I read it.
Still very much love her music and her spirit.
