This is the first book of the Adair Family series I’ve read.
It’s written well so I didn’t feel lost or as if something is missing, since I didn’t read any of the previous books.
I loved how this book started off.
Childhood best friends. That were inseparable. Their friendship was so special and so important to them. Along with that friendship came the protectiveness.
It was so endearing seeing both Brodan and Monroe trying to protect each other to the best of their abilities.
Then things started to take a different turn when they reached their teenaged years.
They were still best friends but now there was awkwardness.
At this point in time for me is when me feelings for Brodan started changing.
He went from me seeing him as a hero to slowly starting to lose respect for him as each year went by.
I understood his misgivings and reluctance to want more with Roe at that tender age.
As time went by and he became older his thinking process never matured, okay fine.
But he became selfish and unkind. Everything was also about him and his wants and needs.
When he and Roe are back in the town they grew up in eighteen years later.
He’s still no better. He’s gotten meaner and downright cruel.
I really liked Monroe.
Her upbringing was absolutely horrible.
The only good things in her life were Brodan, his siblings and school, even though she at times was bullied there.
She bet the odds. Made a good life for herself and was a woman to be admired.
I hated what Brodan was doing to her just when she started finding solid footing again.
The book as a lot going on.
Not only with Monroe and Brodan. But outside forces as well.
At times I felt a bit bombarded by everything going on.
Some were realistic like the paparazzi. But a couple of things just didn’t jive.
Brodan redeemed himself somewhat for me towards the end.
I wish he was made to grovel so much more though.
Their story is emotional and tumultuous.
If he wasn’t so prideful I think went they went through wouldn’t have been so painful and so toxic.
But I’m absolutely thrilled that Roe found peace and contentment.
I’m looking forward to reading Beyond the Thistles.
I am so intrigued by Walker and Sloane.
