diana_reads_and_reads 's review for:
James
by Percival Everett
I have a lot of side eye for books that are everywhere and that everyone says are excellent. Sometimes people are right, though. I don’t know how long it would have taken me to get around to James if it hadn’t been for book club and I can say that I would have been missing out. I have only a glancing familiarity with Huck Finn and I don’t think I needed more than that, although I do plan to finish the graphic novel Big Jim and the White Boy. Everett’s code switching is brilliant and used to great effect from beginning to end. I appreciated that every use of the n-word felt like a slap, unlike the prolific use in Huck Finn, and the contrast really makes the point. I am really looking forward to this discussion.
