3.5-4.0 / 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️🌟 —— While a bit acronym/mnemonic-device heavy for the first portion, this work grew on me and eventually gives some Dr. Becky (“Good Inside”) vibes here and there, especially on the front of parenting scripts / application scenarios. I can’t say there was much “new” content here, but I’m never opposed to hearing a different angle or framing to help content sink in all the more. My biggest recommendation for her would’ve been to utilize a different organizational structure for the writing as it tended to jump around as one might do with podcast episodes.
Dr. Aliza Pressman cites from the beginning (and on her dust-jacket, so no spoilers here) the following principles as key to positive parent-child (or educator-child) interactions, growth, and outcomes:
1. Relationship
2. Reflection
3. Regulation
4. Rules
5. Repair
Exploring each of the above extensively along with other relevant concepts, she’s great about referring back to when/how the principles may be relevant to a wide array of specific scenarios. Albeit not groundbreaking, it’s still helpful and mostly engaging and clear.
GoodReads doesn’t yet list the audiobook edition among versions one could read, but I should note that I chose to mindfully consume this content via audiobook since narrated by the developmental psychologist author herself. As the host of the Raising Good Humans podcast, she’s upbeat with a musical quality to her speaking voice, and her text mostly translates as her to audio form nicely (minus extended reliance upon mnemonics I’d forget the start of once we wrapped up their explanation). Portions that were script/reflection base were pleasant enough for mindful cleaning/traveling/cooking audiobook gleaming. Earlier portions based on lists make me want to circle back for an eyes-on-page reread hereafter so that I may underline various portions for my best retention.
