I wanted so badly for this to reach 5 stars.

This book felt longer than it was because it was such a satisfying amount of action. Beliel’s arc was fantastic and heartbreaking. Penryn finally realized her potential. I was worried that Raffe’s character would be sullied but I’m glad that didn’t happen.

The few issues I had were with details in the end.

The change of mind was sudden and shallow. After all this time preparing for goodbye, suddenly everything is fine and dandy. This shift should have been prepared a bit better. I also really wanted Uriel’s wings to be sacrificed instead of Raffe’s…they’re RIGHT THERE. Raffe has already been removed and reassembled a few times by now so why couldn’t that be sufficient as imperfection? Or maybe Gabriel was making up his own rules all along? I suspect this would have been fleshed out better if the series had been the original 5 intended books instead of 3…maybe if book 2 had been used to prepare this better, I would have ultimately been more satisfied.

Regardless of my wishes, I was still drawn in the entire time I read this book, and the series as a whole. Sometimes I wished for Penryn to be a few years older since Raffe is so experienced, but I guess being YA it was intended for younger audiences. At 17 I think Penryn’s desires and responses to Raffe were age-realistic, but reading this book outside of young-adulthood myself made the almost-sex scenes a tiny bit uncomfortable. Selfishly, I would have preferred her to be 20 and have them just go for it. LOL.

Small issues aside, this series was a great read and I’m thankful for it. It has helped me get excited about reading again and I and indebted for that.
