Endless Night
by Agatha Christie
I was on my way to giving this a low 3, but the ending caught me off guard and retroactively made me enjoy this book enough to bump up to the four; probably more like a 3.75. Even though I've read the Roger Ackroyd book and this one has a very similar twist, I still managed to be surprised by it, and even skim-read through some previous passages to try to catch hints.
This book was very slow to get going, and while I thought Christie did a great job in building an atmosphere of foreboding, 2/3 of the book is a long time to drag that out. When the murder happened, things moved much more quickly and my own interest picked up.
In addition, while I actually quite liked Ellie as a character, I found Michael to be kind of obnoxious (this was probably on purpose), which made getting through the majority of the book kind of laborious since it was all from his perspective and there wasn't much action. I did appreciate, though, Michael's thoughts and reflections on the different way that he and Ellie viewed money and life through the lens of her being extremely wealthy and him not. I thought those aspects were quite well done, even if the whole relationship was kind of a con.
