I picked this up when I woke up and couldn’t fall back asleep. I wanted something that would entertain me and NOT make me think or feel too much. In other words, I didn’t want to read a book from the Booker Prize and I didn’t want something too sad or too scary. I ended up devouring this entire book in one sitting. It is exactly what my brain and my heart wanted.

Honestly, there is not anything super special about this book. It isn’t award winning writing. The characters aren’t ones you fall absolutely in love with. There is nothing complex going on with the plot. I didn’t learn anything new.

What this book IS: entertaining. This book is a good time. In as much as it is not special, it is ALSO not doing anything bad. The writing is decent and doesn’t negatively distract. The characters are normal and relatable. The plot is sometimes funny, which is nice in a rom-com and doesn’t go off the rails or get annoying. This book achieved something rare: balance. It wasn’t tropey, cheesy, or silly. But it also wasn’t weepy, profound, or heartbreaking.

I see that this author has a lot of backlist, and I’m glad for it. I will actually want a few paperbacks of hers on hand. We all tend to read for different reasons. Most of the time, I expect to think or feel differently after I read a book. Sometimes though, I just want to be entertained and nothing is something I am in the mood for. (Romance feels too cheesy. Mysteries and thrillers… meh. Horror would be too gross. Fantasy and science fiction - too complex.) THIS is the kind of book that fills that void easily.
