Once again we find ourselves drawn back into the lives of Jamie and Clare Frasier and their lives in a young and burgeoning America just before the Revolutionary War. This installment finds us following their lives as they make a live for themselves in the settlement Frasier's Ridge. The book has a lot of different events that happen along with the detailing of every day life but the main narrative and conflict of the book is that as the Revolutionary war draws closer (which Clare being from the future is obviously aware of the outcome) Jamie has to dance a tricky dance and gracefully move from being a loyalist to a revolutionary and not get caught in the middle at the wrong time. With one of his closest friends Lord John being on one side and his family knowing who will win and what the outcome will be this is no small feat. The plot of this book is a continuation of many other plot lines that have been running through the series including the return of the dastardly Stephen Bonnet, the mystery of the gold at River Run and Clare's attempting to practice medicine in a completely different era.
A Breath of Snow and Ashes is a character driven novel that really is more about the emotional journey of the characters than the plot although the plot is interesting as well. We watch as all four characters deal with the extraordinary circumstances they are given. We also have watched Jamie and Clare as they grow together over the years and their marriage feels real and well written. The story unfolds at a leisurely pace with a lot of detail so some may not appreciate the in depth detail and feel it moves slowly. I didn't mind this and feel the detail and intimacy with the characters really helps you feel as if you are there.
Overall, I think this installment was much better than the previous one and feel like the story picked up quite a bit and began moving forward. There are also some genuinely suspenseful moments as well.
I definitely think Outlander is one of the better series of our times and have enjoyed reading it so far.
