This Will Only Hurt a Little by Busy Philipps

3.0

I have always really liked Busy Philipps and I still do! But this book was a little underwhelming. Actually, the first half concerning her childhood and some pretty traumatizing events in her past were really interesting. Up until about the time she starts getting roles, I was really enthralled in her story. Her writing is very off the cuff and she doesn't hold back when it comes to punctuation and caps lock, which I appreciated because her voice really came through. I'm not a purist when it comes to format.
Around the time she starts getting roles and being more successful is when I starting zoning out. The latter half of the book feels a little tone deaf in regards to her wealth and status of privilege. It kind of feels disingenuous to complain about a Disney cruise and laughing off accidentally paying like $3000 for wifi or whatever.
But, overall, I did really enjoy this book. It was a fairly quick read and the first half was definitely interesting, but also pretty serious so I would definitely be wary if you're triggered or disturbed by themes of sexual assault.
