Glass Sword by Victoria Aveyard

4.0

I may need a Tylenol and a head compress to combat the whiplash this book gave me by its end.

What it's about? Mare is on the run with Cal after the events concluding Red Queen with the Scarlet Guard, but Maven is close behind with the full force his new title brings him. Mare struggles with her powers, the faces of those killed because of her, and the fact that she must keep lying to everyone, even herself. But hey, she can't trust anyone. Her new goal is to find other red bloods like her and start a rebellion to expose the lies of Maven and his mother. Will she be successful? If only it was that simple.

What I thought? Victoria can write a complex story and all the powers the new red bloods possess were amazing. However, the story dragged in a few places and at times I felt the timeline made no sense. I did like the plot progression and where the story ended in its entirety even with the plot twists that left me with whiplash by the story's end. I'm intrigued to keep going and thankful to my friend for finally shoving this book in my face after so long. Mind you, I read Red Queen about 4 years ago, not that it mattered because this book discusses the happenings in its predecessor frequently due to Mare not being able to shut out the damage it did to her psyche.

In short: Interesting plot progression, but timeline was wacky, a lot of emotional baggage everywhere, and a head spinning amount of plot twists.
