Hamilton's Battalion: A Trio of Romances by Courtney Milan, Alyssa Cole, Rose Lerner

5.0

Overall:

I loved these stories so much. Deeply emotional at times, and other times light. I’m not familiar with the musical of Hamilton, so I don’t know all the ways this collection tied to it, but I loved getting these historical romances, seeing Jewish and Black heroes and heroines get their HEA. I loved the Jewish elements in Rose Lerner’s story, and it felt validating in many ways. Courtney Milan’s story is more humorous, but the development between Henry and John was beautiful to see. Alyssa Cole’s story may be my absolute favorite for the emotions and the letters Andromeda and Mercy wrote each other. And one of my favorite elements of the whole collection was the way they tied together, especially by Mercy’s story.

Promised Land by Rose Lerner:

I really liked this. A little slow and confusing at times because I’m not really familiar with all the military and war aspects, but super beautifully emotional. I loved all the Jewish aspects, and a lot of Rachel’s thoughts and feelings felt validating, even though nothing like my own Jewish experiences. A great opposites-attract second chance romance.

Notes:

✡️ war, mention of death, fear of death
✡️ accusations of being a spy, mention of possibility of execution, imprisonment
✡️ mother in law who antagonized MC
✡️ Jewish faith and culture central
✡️ vague mentions of sex
✡️ a shell that lands near MC, explosion
✡️ on page sex, including piv
✡️ transmisia - demanding to see genitals to prove gender; no naked reveal

The Pursuit Of... by Courtney Milan

I really liked this. It didn’t have the same emotional depth of the previous story, but it was a nice, for the most part, amusing story. The last chapter or so was full of emotional depth and I loved the slow burn aspect of John and Henry’s relationship. I also liked that Henry wasn’t allowed to just be idealistic; he had to confront his ideas in such a way that made him more aware of other’s reality. I also loved the cheese and how central it was to the development between John and Henry.

Content notes:

🧀 violence, threat of death, brawl
🧀 references to verbally, emotionally abusive father, belittlement
🧀 racism
🧀 casual ableism
🧀 on page sex - fellatio, anal, manual stimulation
🧀 threat of execution, beating

That Would be Enough by Alyssa Cole

This was a beautiful story, and another more emotional one. I love how vibrant Andromeda is, especially in contrast to how straight-laced Mercy is. I also adored the letter writing, and the development of their relationship. Mercy had been hurt and her lashing out was so painful to read, but understandable. Loved this story so much~

Content notes:

🖊 death of parents, poverty, rough neighborhood
🖊 references to past breakup, MC left for a man
🖊 burned letters, trivializing of writer’s words
🖊 racism
🖊 on page sex - breast play, frottage
