Overture to Death by Ngaio Marsh

4.0

This is one of my favorites, partly because Nigel Bathgate is less of a nuisance than usual, but primarily because the cast of characters is enjoyable. Troy isn't in this one, although Alleyn writes her a letter, but we have two characters - Dinah and Henry - who are in love which serves as a surrogate for Alleyn and Troy being in love. And we have the vampy, actress type (a type Alleyn has fallen for in early books) whose charms, thankfully, fail to captivate Alleyn.
