Thank you to Penguin Young Readers Group and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for a new review!
In Deadly Ever After by Brittany Johnson two dead princesses, Amala and Kha’dasia, must go on a quest to find true love’s kiss to bring them back to life.
I love this concept so much. Amala and Kha’dasia’s quest to return to life promises a sweeping and emotional adventure. In reality, I thought it was a bit of a let-down. The setting of the afterlife is beautifully described and atmospheric and I loved meeting each Elder character. The challenges they face are creative and unique but they happen pretty quickly. I think if this book spent more time focused on the quest and delving into who Amala and Kha’dasia are as characters it would have better lived up to its potential. As is, there isn’t much to Amala and Kha’dasia other than their backstories - which are compelling! But I wanted deeper characterization.
There were also some odd word choices and phrases. They seemed modern and pulled me out of the historical fantasy world. Or at least I got the impression it was historical? This is another thing that could have been established better.
Overall, I enjoyed what Johnson gave us - even if it didn’t live up to its premise in my opinion.
