The Chimes by Charles Dickens

2.0

Ugh. Seriously? Dickens is the worst sometimes. Supposedly "good" bell spirits convince a man he's died & then torture him by showing him his daughter's life slowly going so much to hell that she is going to jump into an icy river with her newborn baby & DIE? And then, when the man realizes he hasn't died after all and his daughter's life hasn't gone to hell, he THANKS the spirits for their MERCIFUL interaction with him? I don't know whether to scream or throw up.

Two stars because even bad Dickens is frighteningly good at showing the hopelessness of deep poverty.
