The Braid by Laetitia Colombani
1.0
Good Idea Poor Execution. That's how I'd sum up my review and for that reason, accord it a Single Star.
The author appears to have created a screenplay for a movie and possibly, as an after thought, published it as a novella.
This shows up in the very shallow, cliched characters and saccharine sweet storyline. The author has used well-researched findings to pack as much possible in showing how deep her understanding is - respecting Indian caste, customs and beliefs; Italian values or the decadent corporate culture. In the process she fails to create three-dimensional protagonists and just ticks off all the boxes to try and appeal to everyone by tugging at their heart strings. Fails miserably, at least in my case.
The movie might fare better, who knows. But, there is little literary value packed in this, what used to be called "penny dreadfuls!"
