An Anonymous Girl by Greer Hendricks, Sarah Pekkanen

Oh boy was this a snoozefest. I probably wouldn't have finished it if I hadn't been stuck on a long haul flight for 12 hours with little else to do.

The premise was intriguing, but instead of a twisty-turny psychological thriller, I got a slow, plodding read without any hook to keep me interested. As I was reading, I didn't know what the central mystery even was (I still don't), and as things progressed at a snail's pace it was mostly a repetitive cycle of characters wondering if the other characters knew what they knew; then we'd find out that yes, character A knew about X, but now does character B know about Y?. And rinse and repeat. There was so much unnecessary bloat that could have been cut out; although the amount of things that actually occurred in the plot were so few you wouldn't have much of a book left if you did scrap all the pointlessness.

The passive voice used in the sections from the psychologist's perspective was interesting, but otherwise the prose was bland and sometimes awkward, with a lot of missing speech marks in my version (Kindle), and the whole first section of the book seemed to have used autocorrect to change all instances of "off" to "of".

Usually I whizz through domestic thrillers, even (especially?) if they're kinda trashy, but this was a chore to get through. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, even if you enjoy the genre.
