The Sugar by Judy Ramirez

4.0

"All of my pain gave him pleasure. All of my suffering. All of my humiliation."

The Sugar is an extremely bizarre story about addiction. In this book, you follow Jolene, a "sugar," which escapes from a compound where her and her family were held by a Devourer named Alphonse.

Jolene is biologically a drug. She has to be tortured to create what is needed to get high. Another Devourer, Maxwell, gets a taste of her and becomes obsessed with capturing her to keep for his own personal use.

I loved this story. The back and forth between Jolene and Maxwell was one of my favorite parts. Jolene was a total badass who definitely didn't make life any easier for Maxwell.

I recommend this book to those who like stories that involve characters who are weird, unique, psychotic and compulsive.
