Austerlitz by W.G. Sebald

2.0

Ugh. This entire book felt like one long, never-ending run-on sentence. I kept going because of the hype, hoping the payoff would be worth it. It wasn't. Even listening at 2x speed, I struggled to stay awake.

The premise (uncovering the past, both personal and historical) should be compelling. But it just didn't work for me. Austerlitz, the main character, tells his story to the unnamed narrator, but constantly goes off on tangents about architecture and abstract concepts that drag on forever. Not much actually happens.

I was bored, confused, and underwhelmed. It seems to resonate with many people, just… not me.
