I picked up In Her Shadow because the description hit the exact mood-reader criteria my brain picked for the week: dark, stalker-y, obsessive, and heavy on the breeding kink. And on that front? It delivered in spades.

Objectively, the book had issues. There were some misused words and clunky phrasing. The dialogue could’ve been stronger. It desperately needed continuity editing, especially around the timeline and characters’ ages. And it asked for way more suspension of disbelief than I normally give a romance set in the real world.

Subjectively, this book was a rollercoaster I wish I could ride again. It was dark, a little unhinged, packed with plot twists I didn’t see coming, and fully committed to being a beacon of chaos. I feel like I might need therapy now. But it was worth it. I had an amazing time. This is absolutely a guilty pleasure read.

Spice-wise, I’d give it 4.5 🌶️. It’s not the best-written spice, but it was dark, plentiful, and fairly kinky.

Final rating: 3.25 stars. It’s not a masterpiece (and it wasn’t trying to be), but it was fun. I might even reread it for the vibes. And I’d absolutely recommend it to select friends who can handle the darkness and enjoy a little stalker chaos.
