I persisted with this book due to the really high rating it has on GR and how well regarded it is in general, but, sadly, I didn’t enjoy it. The writing (the translation?) feels heavy and I didn’t connect with any of the characters which meant that some moments which were supposed to be powerful and affecting did nothing for me. I appreciated some of the humour in the writing, but this became sparser as the novel went on. I kept expecting it to get better and to have that moment where the high praise made sense. Alas.
