Insatiable by Meg Cabot
3.0

This is vampire-lite meets soap opera. It isn’t too far removed from what you’d imagine from Insatiable, the soap opera Meena writes for. Meena is the girl who can’t get ahead at the office, has a candy drawer and has a problem looking for love when she can picture how each new guy dies. It is most definitely not a gift…knowing how every one is going to die. But what makes Meena appealing is that she feels compelled to help or warn them. She is sweet and good. Emily Bauer’s voice captures this aspect of how I envision her perfectly. But there are aspects of Meena that I couldn’t connect with. She was caught up with material things, like a Jacob’s tote. This means nothing to me, but it was tiresome to hear about it over and over again. Meena was also naive, dingy and didn’t stand up for herself through a large part of the book. She had VICTIM stamped all over her.

Things get very complicated for her when she meets and falls in love with Lucien. Lucien was an interesting character. Not quite as dark as I’d picture the Prince of Darkness, but tortured and haunting nonetheless. (I really think Rhiannon Frater’s Prince of Darkness may have ruined all others for me.) He left Romania for New York to discover who is at the bottom of murders being committed by a rogue vampire. And where the Prince goes the Vatican follows trying to kill him. Poor Lucien. He has Alaric the Vatican’s most fanatical vampire killer after him and is trying to get to the bottom of a vampire coup. This is where the ACTION is and what kept me tuned in for 16 hours. Emily does an excellent job portraying the men and adding depth to all the secondary characters. I actually enjoyed them all more than Meena’s cheery voice. I’ll probably continue the series in audiobook to see what happens, but I’m not rushing out to do so.

If you crave a Vampire Soap Opera, Insatiable is for you.
