Midnight Bayou by Nora Roberts

3.0

A very average 3 stars. So many words for so little that happened. A very low-stakes haunting (the horror girly in me found this aspect a big let down) and while I enjoyed some aspects of it (the setting and the broader characters - Odette, Raimi) the romance and the mystery (using that term **very** loosely) just weren’t engaging. Declan was a bit of a shameless ass, honestly. But fine, I could overlook it. Early 2000s.

I have read a few Nora Roberts novels now… I’ve come to realise I love how she writes women and their stories are so compelling, the character layered, but with her romances she just doesn’t stoke the coals of yearning enough to be enjoyable.

Very randomly, an early scene describes a mother nursing her child, and it’s written so wonderfully and perfectly captures that warm, basking glow of love you feel as a mother nursing your baby. I can tell that was written from a place of love and fond experience.
