Beartown by Fredrik Backman
3.5
emotional slow-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Complicated
Loveable characters: Complicated
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

Until the 50% mark I was fully prepared to give this book 2.5 stars. The beginning was sooooo slow. Basically the first third of the book was introducing the characters. After that it picked up a little.

I thought overall that it dealt with a difficult topic in a respectful way but my goodness was it slow and repetitive. Like yes we get it it's a hockey town and the men are terrible and the women put up with it. It didn't have to be repeated so many times. And this could very well be a translation thing but there was no subtlety. It's like the reader couldn't be trusted to understand the point that was being made.

I can see why people would like this book but it's just not for me. Probably won't read the rest of the series.
