Out of Bounds
by R.S. Grey
I hate these kind of books. The ones you’re for sure you’re going to love and then you come out of it feeling very meh. I’m more disappointed than anything after reading The Summer Games: Out of Bounds, because I had such high hopes going in and I was only let down the more I read. Before going into Out of Bounds I was thinking something along the lines of, “Oh, yay! Another R.S. Grey book to love.” I came out of it thinking, “What did I just read?”
Out of Bounds begins really well. I was hooked to the story, and I was for sure I was going to fall in love with this book. At first the tension between Brie and Erik was off the charts hot and I couldn’t get enough of it. But then everything changed. Erik started acting like the biggest douche on the planet and Brie started acting childish. I kept thinking, “Things will get better.” Only they didn’t. It only got worse.
Brie started off as a strong, independent gymnast who I instantly liked in the beginning, by the end of the book she turned into a whiny, childish character I couldn’t stand. Erik was a jerk in the beginning, and I thought he was a misunderstood jerk-and he would change, but he went from being a misunderstood jerk to an asshole douche canoe whose actions only got worse by the middle of the book. He didn’t have any redeeming qualities at all by the end of the book, in my opinion.
Possible spoiler incoming, read at your own risk. There is a scene at the 52% mark that a lot of people have mentioned having a problem with. I’m right there with them. It’s not that it was a f/f/m scene, I don’t have a problem with f/f or f/f/m. Different strokes for different folks, and all that jazz. I won’t deny that the scene wasn’t hot, because it was. My problem with the scene is that it came outta nowhere and felt like it was added for the sole purpose of shock value. It added absolutely nothing to the story. The book would’ve been fine without it. It added zip zap zero to it. And I only ended up hating Erik more after because he was even a bigger jerk than he had been before after it went down. So there’s that.
My biggest problem was the characters. If they had any redeeming qualities and acted their age, I think I would’ve liked this a whole lot more. The writing was decent, but the character development needed a lot of work. I hate that I feel disappointed by this book, but I do. The beginning had a lot of potential, and it just crashed and burned the more the story went on. This could totally be a case of it’s not the book, it’s me so don’t take my words to heart. Everyone reads differently and you might like Out of Bounds, it just wasn’t my cup of tea.

I'm disappointed. The beginning was good, the middle wasn't all that, and the ending was okay. I didn't connect with any of the characters. Some things that happened didn't make sense for the story. I ended up skimming most of the book. It bums me out that I didn't like this one because I've loved the previous books of hers that I've read, and I had high hopes going in.
