This book was fine. I had more expectations for an epic finale and battle but the majority of the book was slow and dragging as they journeyed around trying to find allies, only for the final battle to feel rushed at the end. The first book was great, and the second book was still interesting and had a shocking conclusion, but where this book picked up left more to be desired. It just felt like the author was milking the same trope of witch versus witch hunter again. Like how many times can they go back and forth loving and hating each other and making them forget each other for annoying at times. I wanted the romance and the development of their relationship, but everytime one of them backslides it stalls their development and makes me feel like I’m just rereading the same arguments and fights from the first two books.
The conclusion was rushed. It did tie up everything in a neat little bow and I’m happy the characters have found their happiness, but there were no other lasting deaths or casualties that made the stakes of this book feel really high. Yes there was danger and I am glad that none of the main characters died, but with Ansel’s death in the last book I expected something more out of the final battle.
At the very least I do think the actual writing was decent and I enjoyed listening to this as an audiobook.
