Policing Black Lives: State Violence in Canada from Slavery to the Present by Robyn Maynard

5.0

A book so holistic and well-researched that it is completely inarguable. I wish I could make everyone read this book - I wish it was compulsory reading in school curriculums. To read this book and not see that black and indigenous lives are systemically devalued and aggressively controlled is to deny truth, facts, and history. Never has it been more obvious that Canada is and has always been a white supremacist settler-colonial project, and that any gestures towards some vague sense of national character tied to multiculturalism is an intentional PR campaign. We live in a terrible place, and we have so much to fix, so much power to drag out of the hands of the ruling class; so much work to do. Not a fun read, but a necessary one for literally every Canadian.
