Chain of Thorns by Cassandra Clare

5.0

I’m not really sure where to start with this one. I spent the majority of the read being torn between wanting to devour the whole thing from start to finish, and dragging it out to savour because I know it’ll be the last shadowhunter book for a while.

The Shadowhunter universe is incredibly nostalgic for me. It’s probably the series I’ve been reading the longest, since I was 15 years old (more than half of my life!), so I will most likely enjoy all the books more purely on that basis.

That being said, The Last Hours trilogy is definitely up there with my favourite books of the series. You can’t help but adore the characters Clare writes. She draws you in by exposing their vulnerabilities in the most beautiful way, creating authentic and relatable characters that carry you through a dramatic and engaging plot.

Trying to find a way to review this particular book without also discussing specific plot points and giving away spoilers is difficult, as I’m desperate to talk about what took me by surprise and what made my heart melt into a puddle. For now, all I’ll say is that it was everything I wanted it to be and also a few things I didn’t (because yes I know not everyone gets a happily ever after but dammit I will ALWAYS want that).

I could probably talk for hours about how much I love Clare’s writing, the way I feel as if I’m experiencing the story and not just reading about it. I love these books so much. I know everything ends eventually, but it’s hard to believe there will come a day when we aren’t waiting for any more Shadowhunter books to be released. I am so not looking forward to that day!
