The Wrath & the Dawn by Renée Ahdieh

5.0

I came to bed at 9:30 thinking I was going to be good and get an early nights sleep because I stayed up until 3am with this book last night. Foolishly I thought "oh I'll just read one chapter before bed". Two hours later I've just finished The Wrath and the Dawn and realised there's a part two!!!!! How will I pass the time until it is released?!?!?! This book is so good!!!! I LOVED it! I've always dismissed books like this as fairytales but not only was the story good but the writing was lyrical and I adored the wisdoms sprinkled throughout. It's a retelling a 1001 Arabian Nights, which I've never read, at least not in its entirety, so can't comment on any comparison of the original to this retelling.

It straddles themes of revenge and loyalties while throwing in the complexities of humans and their limitations, the realisation that all is not always as it seems and when the truth is made apparent how does one go back on their convictions, and more importantly the strength it takes to live your life according to your new found convictions. I really enjoyed this book. Like I said, it's very much outside of what I'd normally read but I'm glad I did and now wait impatiently for The Rose and The Dagger, it's sequel.
