The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest by Stieg Larsson

I won't mince words. The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest is subpar compared to the rest of the Millennium Trilogy. While the first two books were expertly written mysteries, Hornet's Nest was a crime thriller with no mystery to keep the pages turning. Plus, Larsson's writing becomes self-indulgent in this novel. In particular, he changes Blomkvist's character into (what I suspect is) a congratulatory self-insert.

In part, I am glad Hornet's Nest was a disappointment because it makes saying goodbye to the Millennium Trilogy a bit easier. Larsson lets us down easy, so to speak.

As always, Lisbeth Salander's presence is the redeeming quality of Hornet's Nest. I'm so sad to say goodbye to her character.

So long, Millennium! Until the next re-read...
