Soviet Milk by Nora Ikstena

5.0

This is the third Peirene Press book I've read, and each are a thing of beauty - the cover designs are gorgeous.
Soviet Milk is translated from Latvian, and set in Soviet era Latvia over the course of around 20 years. It's written in first person, with alternate chapters narrated by a mother and her daughter. It was a fascinating and beautiful read - the political tensions in the region intermingle with the mother's battle with her mental health, and the daughter's burgeoning understanding of the realities of their situation.
The relationships between grandmother, mother and daughter are well described and developed, and I found this short novel easy to read but difficult to put down.

Disclaimer: I was sent a copy of this book by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
