Is there really anyone who doesn’t adore Becky Brandon (nee Bloomwood)? I’ve loved every instalment of the Shopaholic series so far and was extremely excited to hear everyone’s favourite shopper was back. And what a return it is…Becky is just as endearing, hilarious and outrageous as ever.
Mini Shopaholic starts with the family Christmas shopping and visiting Santa in a department store and is the perfect scene to introduce Mummy Becky and daughter Minnie. I’m not going to deny, I see myself slightly in Becky here … you know that situation where your child is screaming for something in a shop and your torn. Part of you knows you shouldn’t give in; it’s a bad message to send out. Part of you wants to give in for a quiet life. And part of you just really wants to buy that adorable but extortionately priced bit of pink plastic. Seriously, as Mum to my own little princess, I’ve been there. I LOVE shopping for her. But of course this is Becky and the ingenious Pocket Money scheme she comes up with is hilarious! Of course there’s no better season than Christmas for a shopaholic Mum and Becky doesn’t disappoint.
Then when disaster of disasters happen and the words ‘Cut Back’ crop up you can feel Becky’s incomprehension and dismay. But Becky’s nothing if not inventive and she’s certainly not going to let a little thing like recessions stop her. Especially when she has the party to end all parties to plan. Becky’s new approaches to getting what she wants are hysterical, including the most fantastic scene in a pound shop that had tears rolling down my face. Keeping the party a secret from Luke means that she has to come up with more and more outrageous lies and the situations she gets in are fantastic!
I laughed my way through Mini shopaholic. I think it may be one of my favourites, along with Baby and Confessions / Secret Dream world. Becky is over the top, the situations she creates are ridiculous and unbelievable but deep down I can recognise part of myself too. Whatever Becky is, she isn’t malicious or nasty and that means we can forgive her time and time again for all her flaws and rejoice in them. Sophie Kinsella delivers exactly what we’ve come to love and want from the shopaholic series yet again. I admit, I was a little nervous about this book…how much more of Becky can we get before we tire of her or the books stop being fun? Well after reading this I’d say there’s a fair few yet and the ending of Mini Shopaholic sets us perfectly for what could be an absolutely amazing seventh book.
If I had one teeny tiny fault to pick about the book it would be that despite the title, Minnie doesn’t feature as much as I’d expected and to be honest I’d have loved more from her! However, giving Becky a surprise party to organise while trying to cut back was just genius and more than made up for this.
So, if you hadn’t already guessed, I LOVED Mini Shopaholic! It’s as fresh and funny as the first book, Becky’s even more endearing, Luke’s even more despairing and there’s all the usual cast of eccentric characters we know and love - as well as some new ones (I need Nanny Sue myself I think!). Reading the latest Shopaholic is like catching up with an old friend, it’s familiar, you know what you’ll get and you love it for that. I sped read this book, I just couldn’t bear to put it down and the laughs just kept on coming right to the very end. Fans of Shopaholic will not be disappointed with the latest instalment at all!
