Carmilla by J. Sheridan Le Fanu
4.0
This excellent novella is a classic that has been all but forgotten, except for vampire aficionados like me. It predates [b:Dracula|17245|Dracula|Bram Stoker|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1387151694l/17245._SY75_.jpg|3165724] by 25 years (oddly enough, Le Fanu was Irish like Bram Stoker) but has a much more modern feel to it, almost as if it was written in recent times. The story has a lot of elements similar to vampire stories, but keep in mind that this is the first true vampire story. There were earlier poems and stories that had vampires or similar creatures in them, but they weren't one of the main characters. This is a must read for any vampire lore fan!
