Parable of the Sower
by Octavia E. Butler
I’ve had this on my list for a while now and finally decided to read it this year after a friend told me that the book is set in 2024.
I don’t read sci-fi that much so I didn’t enjoy this book as much as others probably did. I don’t mean that I didn’t think it was a good book. Far from it, I was amazed at how eerily prescient Octavia Butler was in writing this story. The dystopian elements felt so realistic that I actually could not wait to finish the book because the world she painted within these pages was so awful I wanted to finish reading it and get out of that world as quickly as I can. It reminded me a bit of Margaret Atwood’s writing in the Handmaid’s Tale. It’s chilling to read, knowing how close our current reality is to that world..
Definitely a worthwhile read, particularly if you’ve never read a book by Butler but be prepared. I will read the sequel sometime this year but room be sure to follow it up with a light and happy book afterwards.
