As someone who participated in and was formed by high school performing arts, Trust Exercises gets so much right about that insular world; its own special rituals and politics that are at once unique but also universal to every former theatre kid. The magical feeling of autonomy on rehearsal days, the thrill of being looked at on stage. Still...the sorrow, isolation, rage, lack of catharsis within this book overpowers nearly any trace of warm nostalgia. There’s much to admire here, but a smaller percentage to actually enjoy.
