My Happy Marriage, Vol. 1 by Akumi Agitogi
5.0

This book caught my attention because of the stunningly beautiful cover. It is a Cinderella retelling set in early 1900’s Japan and it’s absolutely enchanting!

Miyo is the eldest daughter of the Saimori house. Her father was forced to leave his lover and entered into a marriage of convenience with Miyo’s mother. When her mother passed, however, her father married his former lover and had a daughter with her named Kaya. Since that day Miyo has been treated as something even lower than a servant - broken, abused and tormented. When her father announces she is to be married to Kiyoka, head of the Kudou house, she knows she is being cast out from her family. Kiyoka has a reputation for not keeping potential fiancée’s longer than 3 days. But as Miyo comes to stay in his home she discovers that he’s not as cold and heartless as many claim he is.

I am on a major binge of this series right now. The anime just started yesterday so I watched the first episode, read volume one of the manga and read the first light novel. And I am desperate to read/watch more. The storyline is so well thought out and beautifully written. The plot doesn’t live too quickly, with Miyo’s confidence being restored gradually over the course of the novel. The cast of characters were all relatively fleshed out and had their own motivations and characteristics.

Miyo and Kiyoka’s chemistry is subtle and so sweet. The pair get off to a rather stilted and awkward start, but watching them gradually care for and fall for each other was wonderful. Kiyoka in particular just seems like a wonderful person, never pushing Miyo and being extremely respectful and supportive of her. Miyo, while she does tend to be very self deprecating, blossoms over the course of the book and it’s so satisfying to see them grow together.

If you’re looking for a unique Cinderella retelling this is the book for you. It’s short, sweet and beautiful!
