The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller

5.0

I haven't even written a review of Circe, which I read last fall, but I need to express how absolutely in love I am with Miller's novels.

I hesitated to read this because I was unsure how Miller was going to write about the Trojan War. I don' even know why I was worried it'd be all battles. In truth, a large part of this novel does take place during the war, but it hardly felt drawn out.

I flew through this book quicker than I did with Circe. I had forgotten how much Miller's eloquent prose captures both my attention and my heart. She has a masterful balance of detailed and effortlessly uncomplicated. Through her narrators, she weaves such haunting and relatable stories. Honestly, reading her work reminds of nights spent with my grandmother telling me the mythos of ancient Greece to try to lull me into sleep. And like my grandmother, Miller's stories only keep me awake and craving more.

By the time I reached the end of this novel, with all the main plot finished, I was a mess. Much like Circe I sobbed my way through the last 2-3 pages. That alone moves Miller up to my favorite authors of all time.
