Wild Dark Shore by Charlotte McConaghy

5.0

Charlotte McConaghy is an author that writes so viscerally; her words sink into your bones and it feels like her stories are a part of you. I can still **feel** the way I felt while reading her debut, Migrations. It's that 5-star feeling you chase every single time you pick up a book...and in Wild Dark Shore, McConaghy delivers again!

A year ago, while scrolling instagram, I saw McConaghy post about some seals and penguins with a caption that said, "I have finished my new novel..." It's been a long wait since then, but after having finished that novel now, it was worth every second.

Dominic Salt and his three kids are all that's left on an island. One night, an unconscious woman washes up on the shore, barely alive. Who is she? How did she get here? What does she want? As she recovers, a whole lot of secrets are revealed and these five people must decide how they will move forward when the supply ship arrives in a few weeks.

In her signature style, McConaghy tackles the complex themes of grief, complicated family relationships, resiliency, and environmental conservation. Not only was I equally drawn to the fictional relationships she created; I was also equally interested in the environmental aspect McConaghy is known for. I came away with a new appreciation for seed conservations, rising sea waters, elephant seals, and king penguins. McConaghy melded these two worlds seamlessly!

It doesn't matter where McConaghy takes me, I'm all in for her atmospheric writing, her subtle yet demanding environmental education, and her fictional characters that pull at my heartstrings.
