The Traitor Prince by C.J. Redwine

3.0

I received this as an eARC through Edelweiss.

Javan is finishing his time training a his academy. He is attacked by a dragon when finishing his graduation test. Javan soon learns that there is a plot to kill him and keep from returning to his father, the king, whom he has not seen in many years. Few know what Javan really looks like and a traitor is able to take his place in line for the crown. By a "lucky" twist of fate, Javan is sent to prison instead of being killed. He is offered a chance to meet up with the king, if he can be victorious in the prison's deadly tournament. With the help of Sadja a prison slave, who is hiding her own identity, Javan has the best chance to take his rightful place.

This novel was well-developed and well written. I have not read any of the others in the series, so perhaps it would have been more impactful if I had read the others. It was difficult for me to get into the story. However, the concept was unique and compelling.
