Riptide by Douglas Preston, Lincoln Child
4.0

I'm currently nearly finished with a novel about Oak Island, so when I heard that Preston and Child wrote a book about that same subject (they changed names and locations, but if you know anything about Oak Island, this was heavily, HEAVILY inspired by it) I had to read it. It hits most of the points that you'd be looking for in an adventure novel. There is an expedition, there is scientific reasoning behind what they're doing, and there are plenty of action sequences, as well as an unlikely hero twist right at the end.
They left some dangling arcs which is what I took the star away for (for example the Claire character was pretty useless. They could have cut her completely and still had the characters motivations been just as strong. In fact I'd wager they'd be stronger without her), and some of the relationships never really coalesced into what I thought they had the ability to.
This is not the book to read if you're looking for a deep, introspective read, but my god is this a beach read. Or quarantine read, as it were. It's fast paced and fun, with just enough science to keep it from being just a trashy novel. I could have done with more about the Ragged Island's mystery, especially the pirate connection, but it was a ton of fun.
