Twin Peaks: The Final Dossier by Mark Frost
5.0
Mark Frost, you wily little sh!t, I should have known.
Just as the series finale of Twin Peaks: The Return spends its first half lulling you into a nostalgic sense of security, only to suddenly do a complete 180 and punch you directly in the face while scoffing "bitch, you thought," this book also spends an inordinate amount of time hiding its purpose. The first two thirds are essentially a fandom wiki in hardback format. Which, hey, I'm a big enough nerd to enjoy a good fandom wiki, nothing wrong with that, but I was just beginning to reach the point of "Is this all there is?" And then right on cue, the final third once again punches you in the face and laughs at your tears. Without getting into spoilers (although let's be real, to actually spoil any of this would take about 7,000 preamble words of backstory) let's just say it confronts the cosmic implications of The Return, and specifically The finale, in a way that somehow left me simultaneously less and more confused and experiencing the same bout of existential dread I felt upon finishing The Return. Bravo.
