This book is masterful.
I can understand why some may think it's slow. This is not a jump scare spooky horror, it is insidious. It draws you in a tiny bit at a time, and before you know if you're head deep in madness.
It did not feel slow to me at all, because Due's writing is a perfect blend of straight forward and flowery, it was a pleasure to read. She juggles every aspect of the plot with ease, until finally each pieces falls into place. At times this book genuinely scared me, at times it brought me to tears.
In this book we follow David, an immortal, who is determined to have his wife and daughter forever. He has lived hundreds of years, and in that time he has experienced extreme loss. This time, he wants his happy ending, and he will have it no matter the cost.
All I can say is, may this type of love never find me! The turmoil and terror that David brought to his wife's life is unmatched. And yet, in the end, I found myself rooting for him. Due gave me Stockholm syndrome! I never thought I would still have loving emotions toward an abusive man, because that's what he was at the end of the day, an abuser.
One of the best horror books I've read, hands down.
