this book was a total page turner. it started off strong and interesting, it was easy to follow, the characters had depth without giving us their entire life story, and the mystery kept me on edge the entire book.
I didn’t even realize it at first, but I loved the fact that Verity’s mystery was the main focus while Lowen & Jeremy’s affair was secondary. I believe the book balanced all of its elements and pacing extremely well.
the questions about Verity built up throughout the book but with plenty of foreshadowing. the real twist was that I was always on the right track towards the truth but never actually on point. and then the final plot twist? you’d think it’d be hard to deliver but the author made it so convincing. I was conflicted between the two sides of the truth for a while.
spoilers about the ending:
<spoilers>my only nitpick might be the delivery of the climax when Jeremy found out about the manuscript. he reacted so quickly. it all happened so fast. yes, he already read it before, but I wish the scene of her alive and moving lasted a little longer before he went in & strangled her. other than that, it was a lovely, entertaining book—nothing more & nothing less, but seeing people choose between team “real manuscript, fake letter” vs team “fake manuscript, real letter” was so fun. I hope to read more from Colleen!</spoilers>
