The Secrets Between Us by Thrity Umrigar
4.0

One of the most gripping books I have read in the last couple years. It was a moving story that explored a variety of relationships among women, and asked the question of, what does it mean to be human? It explores the complexities of class, caste, age, and sexuality and how these affect how we choose to define "family." Most of the book was a fascinating and enjoyable read; however, I wasn't very satisfied by the end. It felt contrived -- why did Gopal just take her back, no questions asked -- why did he not come to find Bhima before, if he still had goodwill towards her? why did Amit never seek out his mother? it didn't make sense.
