The Modern Gentleman by Meghan Quinn
5.0
Old- Fashioned type Rom-Com! When I check reviews before reading a book I check ALL the stars to get a sense of what different people thought. There were some unflattering 1 star reviews that made this book seem boring, and one even said vulgar. I almost didn't read it because who wants to be bored and have the same old plots spewed out? I have to respectfully disagree. First of all, this book was one of the least vulgar I've read in a long time. It's actually super tame. I mean, the male protagonist, Wes, is a gentleman. There are some F-bombs thrown around, but maybe I have a different definition of the word "tame".
It was super hilarious! I mean, I laughed out loud SO many times. So much so, that my husband actually would ask to read what I was laughing at, then he would start laughing too. Like my opening line says, it's an old fashioned 90's Rom-Com. I find books like these have become rare. I mostly see really sexual romances ( which I don't mind at all!), or super sappy cliché romances (which I hate!). This was "old-school" in a way and I enjoyed it.
This was very much like the Kate Hudson and Matthew Mconaughey movie "How to lose a guy in 10 Days". A social media writer, Wes, writes a column called "The Modern Gentleman" where he gives dating advice to men that encourages them to leave their frat boy, gaming, beer drinking at the bar with the boys every night ways and actually try to woo a woman and be a gentleman she is infinitely attracted to. Men write in to him with their relationship questions and he answers them "Dear Abby" style. He is tasked by his editor to take his popular column even farther by finding a woman to test his advice on. He finds June in Central Park when she saves him from stepping in dog poop (typical meet cute, right?!). June gives him a run for his money when he is trying to be "The Modern Gentleman" that he preaches to his avid readers.
June's character is hilarious, and Wes is adorable, but if you're looking for huge character development or growth you won't find it here. Both Wes and June are good people from the beginning. Neither are huge assholes, sleep around, have overwhelming commitment issues, etc. Like I said, it's a typical rom-com. This was a refreshing change for me because I usually read darker romances, so the laughs I got were welcomed. If you're looking for a light-hearted quick read that will make you laugh out loud and mix up your usual reads, this is a 5 star read. If you're not into the funny, cliché boy meets girl scene then you probably won't like this book. The plot is kind of basic, and the characters don't really change from beginning to end. There is only one sex scene and it's not that risque, so if you're looking for steamy sex scenes this will also disappoint in that area. But, as I said, it's funny and cute and I'm not mad that I read it. I gave it 5 stars for what it is, not what I wanted it to be.
