Ms. Marvel, Vol. 8: Mecca by G. Willow Wilson

5.0

I had a visceral reaction to the main storyline, where Ms Marvel has to battle not only super-villains but the hate-filled anti-superhero rhetoric (which codes strongly for immigrants and minorities) by a strongman who gains power by illegitimate means. The creators ramp up the tension in those chapters, and it’s a mighty relief when Ms Marvel triumphs with the aid of her community, and then can go back to something more prosaic, like saving a runaway train with a cuteboi costumed hero she first met in Pakistan.
