Ubik by Philip K. Dick
3.0

A compelling, quick read, and (probably emblematic of PKD) somewhat hard to understand at the first go. With its near-future (1992!) setting, we have apartment doors you have to pay to open, dead people accessible to chat with via "half-life," and all sorts of psi-ops agents floating around reading minds. This book is part mystery, part psychological thriller, as our hero tries to sort out fiction from reality from half-reality.

You already know if you're a fan of this sort of thing, and if so, take a chance on Ubik! The plot is the star here (character development is at a minimum), and there are classic sci fi warnings and lessons on human nature to be found. Overall, Ubik is worth a weekend read at least, and some folks might enjoy taking a deeper dive.
